Labour candidate Carol Mochan hosted an online event for International Women’s Day this week (9 March). Carol chaired a panel of local women leading a discussion on how working lives have changed and how local women see the future as times return to normal after the pandemic. The panel members were Lillian Welsh from Auchinleck,   a shielding council employee working from home; Emily Sharpe, a university student from Catrine, learning remotely; Linda Holland, health care worker from Kilmarnock and East Ayrshire councillor Elaine Dinwoodie from Patna.
Carol said, ‘We hold a local event for International Women’s Day every year and in spite of Covid, this year was no different, only it had to be an online discussion. This year the international theme was ‘Choose to Challenge’ and women were invited to post photos online with a hand raised. The world has had some fantastic women to celebrate recently - Kamala Harris, the first woman, and woman of colour to be US Vice President; New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern  brilliantly steering her country through the pandemic; and Sweden’s Greta Thunberg raising awareness on climate change. But Ayrshire also has formidable women like the ones we heard from at our local event and there are many more just like them’
